Thousands Expected at Eldoret Sports Club to Mourn Raila Odinga
All systems are go at the Eldoret Sports Club, where thousands of Uasin Gishu residents are expected to gather tomorrow to pay their final respects to the late Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, Kenya’s former Prime Minister and one of the most iconic figures in the country’s political history.
In a historic and emotional farewell, the residents will follow the live broadcast of Raila Odinga’s state funeral service and burial, which will be held in his rural home of Bondo, Siaya County. Large screens have been mounted at the sports club to enable mourners to participate virtually in the solemn national event.
Local leaders, civil society representatives, and members of the public have called on Kenyans from all walks of life to turn up in large numbers to honour the legacy of the man often described as the “enigma of Kenyan politics.”
“This is more than just a funeral. It’s a national moment of reflection. Raila Odinga gave his life to the service of this country. We invite everyone to come and be part of this historic moment,” said Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi one of the organizers.
Security has been heightened at the venue, and the County Government of Uasin Gishu has assured the public of smooth coordination, including access to amenities such as water, seating, and medical assistance.
Raila Odinga, who passed away last week at the age of 80, will be remembered for his tireless struggle for democracy, social justice, and political reform. His contributions spanned decades, from the fight for multiparty democracy to serving as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013, and contesting five presidential elections.
Today's memorial and burial will be marked by military honours, tributes from dignitaries across the continent, and cultural performances celebrating his life and legacy.
Kenyans unable to travel to Bondo or Eldoret are encouraged to follow the proceedings through national television, radio, and online platforms.
