President Ruto Leads Nation in Mourning Raila Odinga, Hails Him as Towering Giant of Democracy

President William Ruto has led the country in mourning the passing of the Right Honorable Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a "towering figure in our history" and a "quintessential progressive" whose life and struggle helped shape the modern Kenyan nation.

In a solemn and heartfelt tribute delivered today from State House, President Ruto paid glowing homage to his longtime political counterpart, calling him a patriot, a pan-Africanist, and a global statesman whose legacy would endure through the ages.

“We are blessed to live in a country that has been shaped by the will, the leadership, and the vision of the Right Hon Raila Odinga,” President Ruto said. “His was a path walked with conviction. He bore the scars of struggle with dignity, knowing that freedom was not free and that truth often demands sacrifice.”

Describing Odinga as a peacemaker who always placed the country above self, Ruto hailed his optimism, humility, and unshakable belief in the promise of Kenya.

“Hon Raila Odinga always believed that our best days are yet to come. His life was a testament to the enduring power of a vision grounded in democracy, justice, and unity,” he said.

The President noted that Odinga’s leadership and personal sacrifices laid the foundation for Kenya’s new constitutional order and safeguarded the democratic gains of the country.

“He refused to accept the easy path when the right path was harder. He carried himself with courage and grace, and his voice—sometimes fiery, sometimes soft—always echoed with purpose.”

In deeply personal reflections, President Ruto described Odinga not only as a national leader but as a mentor and confidant.

“I have lost a big brother, a mentor, a confidant and a selfless patriot. Every time I needed wise counsel, I turned to him, and he never once failed me—he told me the truth every time, even when it was hard.”

President Ruto also extended condolences to the Odinga family, assuring them of the nation’s unwavering solidarity during this moment of profound grief.

“From my immediate family—Rachel and the children—we want to assure Mama Ida, Rosemary, Raila Junior, Winnie, Senator Oburu, and the entire Odinga family that we stand with them. We are with you.”

Calling on all Kenyans to come together in unity, Ruto urged the country to celebrate the life and legacy of Raila Odinga, and to carry forward the ideals he fought for.

“He has left us a solid foundation built on the rock of faith. It is on that foundation that we shall find our way forward, inspired by his example, his legacy, and his optimism that our future is great.”

The President concluded by expressing hope that Odinga had found peace in the afterlife, saying:

“Hon Odinga is no longer with us, but he has left us stronger and better. We take comfort in the knowledge that he has gone to a better place, a place where rest awaits him.”
