Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga Resigns CoG Post Amid Backlash Over Controversial Remarks on Raila Odinga’s Death

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has stepped down as Deputy Chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG) following a wave of national outrage sparked by his controversial remarks regarding the death of opposition leader Raila Odinga.

The comments, widely condemned as insensitive and divisive, drew emotional reactions from across the country, with many Kenyans accusing the governor of stoking political tension during a period of mourning and national reflection.

In an official statement released on Monday, the Chairperson of the Council of Governors distanced the council from Kahiga’s remarks, emphasizing that his views were personal and did not represent the values or leadership principles of the CoG. The statement reaffirmed the council's commitment to national unity and equitable development, warning that inflammatory rhetoric could undermine Kenya’s fragile social cohesion.

“The Council does not condone any statements that may be perceived to incite or divide the nation,” read part of the statement. “We urge all leaders to demonstrate maturity, empathy, and responsibility in their public communications, especially during sensitive national moments.”

Governor Kahiga later issued a public apology to the Odinga family and residents of the Nyanza region, acknowledging the hurt caused by his comments. “I deeply regret my words and the pain they have caused. My intention was never to disrespect or provoke. I take full responsibility and offer my sincere apologies to all affected,” said Kahiga during a press briefing in Nyeri.

In the same address, Kahiga announced his resignation from his position as Deputy Chairperson of the CoG, a move many analysts see as a strategic attempt to defuse public anger and salvage his political standing.

The fallout from the incident has reignited debate over the ethical standards expected of public officials, particularly during moments of national grief. Civic groups, religious leaders, and citizens alike have called for greater accountability and restraint among elected leaders, urging them to foster unity rather than division.

“The governor’s resignation is a step in the right direction,” said political analyst Grace Mwangi. “It shows that there is still room for accountability in our leadership. However, this incident also reveals how fragile our national cohesion can be when leaders act recklessly.”

Online, public opinion remains deeply divided. While some have lauded Kahiga for taking responsibility and apologizing, others argue that the damage to public trust and national unity may be irreversible.

The late Raila Odinga, a towering figure in Kenyan politics, passed away earlier this month after a long battle with illness. Tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum, with calls for a period of respectful mourning and unity.
