Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga Faces Backlash Over Remarks on Raila Odinga’s Death

 By Linda Kisia

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga is facing strong criticism after making remarks that appeared to celebrate the death of opposition leader Raila Odinga. Speaking during a burial in Nyeri, Kahiga said in Kikuyu that Raila’s death was part of “God’s plan” and that it would help return government resources to the Mt. Kenya region.

The governor claimed that the region had been left out of government benefits and that with Raila gone, “the playing field was now level” as politicians prepare for the 2027 elections. His comments quickly spread online and drew anger from leaders across the country.

Caroline Karugu, the Principal Secretary for the East African Community, condemned the statement, calling it “silly and deeply unfortunate.” Nyandarua Senator John Methu also accused Governor Kahiga of being reckless and disrespectful. Former nominated senator Millicent Omanga said the remarks were shameful and only served to divide Kenyans at a time when the country is mourning.

Many Kenyans on social media described Kahiga’s comments as insensitive and called on him to apologise to the Odinga family and the nation. Critics said such statements could fuel regional and ethnic tensions, especially since Raila Odinga was a major national figure who commanded respect across communities.

Governor Kahiga has not yet issued an apology or clarification about his remarks. Analysts say the controversy could hurt his political image and relationships within the ruling coalition, as Kenyans expect leaders to show unity and compassion during national mourning.

The debate comes as the country continues to honour Raila Odinga’s long political career and his role in Kenya’s democracy. Many leaders have urged politicians to avoid using his death for political gain and instead focus on promoting peace and national healing.
