MMUST Student, 22, Dies After Collapsing During KDF Recruitment in Bungoma
A 22-year-old student from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) died on Wednesday, October 22, after collapsing during a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recruitment exercise in Kabuchai Constituency, Bungoma County.
The tragic incident occurred as the young man participated in one of the physically demanding running drills that form part of the initial KDF screening process.
Confirming the incident, Bungoma County Police Commander said the deceased was among dozens of hopeful recruits taking part in the exercise before he lost consciousness.
“There was a boy who lost consciousness while they were running. He was rushed to Chwele Sub-County Hospital. Sadly, he was pronounced dead upon arrival,” the police boss said.
The body was taken to the Chwele Sub-County Hospital mortuary, as investigations continue to establish the cause of death. Authorities have indicated that a postmortem examination will be conducted to determine what led to the sudden collapse.
The KDF recruitment process is known for its rigorous physical and medical standards, designed to test candidates’ strength, endurance, and overall fitness. Participants are subjected to long-distance runs, push-ups, sit-ups, high jumps, and other endurance activities under close supervision.
Eliud Yegon, one of the senior officers overseeing the recruitment in Bungoma, explained that the demanding drills are meant to ensure that only physically fit and disciplined individuals join the ranks.
“You must be physically fit as per the KDF standards. Also, some of the candidates are eliminated because of the use of drugs,” Yegon said, warning against the use of illicit substances that compromise fitness levels.
He further noted that documentation inconsistencies remain a major challenge during the exercise, with some candidates presenting mismatched birth certificates and national IDs, making it difficult to verify their identity.
The ongoing KDF recruitment drive, launched earlier this month, seeks to enlist General Service Officer (GSO) Cadets (Regular and Graduate), Specialist Officers, General Duty Recruits, Tradesmen and Women, and Defence Forces Constables.
