Missing Man Sparks Outcry After Camera Rental Dispute in Nairobi

A man from Kimilili, Bungoma County, has reportedly gone missing under suspicious circumstances after hiring a high-end camera valued at Sh300,000 from a Nairobi-based photographer. The incident, which has stirred concern among creatives and business owners alike, occurred in Umoja, Nairobi, where the suspect had agreed to return the equipment after a short-term rental.

According to the camera’s owner, the man approached him with a convincing story about needing the device for a documentary project. As a precaution, the owner retained the suspect’s national ID card as security—a common practice in informal rental agreements. However, days passed without any communication, and attempts to reach the man via phone and social media proved futile.

“I trusted him because he seemed genuine and even left his ID behind,” the owner said. “But now, I fear I’ve been conned. That camera was my livelihood.”

The missing man’s disappearance has triggered a wave of online appeals, with the owner now urging anyone with information about his whereabouts to come forward. Screenshots of the suspect’s ID and photos have been circulated across social media platforms, as netizens rally to help track him down.

Local authorities have been notified, but no formal arrest has been made. The case highlights the growing risks faced by small business owners who rely on trust-based transactions in Kenya’s informal economy.

As the search continues, the owner remains hopeful that justice will prevail. “I just want my camera back. If anyone knows where he is, please speak up.”

Anyone with credible information is encouraged to report to the nearest police station or contact the owner directly through the details shared online.a
