Maraga Slams Ruto Administration Over Controversial New Laws
By Phanice Rono
Former Chief Justice David Maraga has issued a scathing critique of President William Ruto’s administration, accusing it of enacting major legislation at highly inappropriate times and in ways that reflect contempt for the will of the people.
Speaking at a press briefing, Maraga expressed deep concern over a series of newly signed laws, warning they pose a significant threat to Kenya’s democracy and the constitutional rights of its citizens.
“We stand here as Kenyans who are deeply concerned about the trajectory our country is taking. It is a mockery of the ideals that Raila Odinga fought for, and a mockery of the 2010 Constitution we swore to protect,” he said.
Maraga specifically condemned amendments to the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes (Amendment) Bill 2024, as well as other digital regulation proposals, arguing that they dangerously expand state control over political speech.
“The amendment seeks to control political expression. This committee becomes both investigator and judge, infringing on the freedom of media use,” he warned.
He also sharply criticized the Privatization Act, claiming it hands excessive and unchecked powers to the Executive in managing state assets.
“The Privatization Act gives Ruto power to do what he wants with public assets. This government is out to rob Kenyans,” Maraga declared.
The former Chief Justice suggested that the administration is rushing to implement the controversial laws before courts can intervene.
“The government knows people are going to court. They are moving with speed so that by the time we obtain court orders, events will have overtaken us.”
Calling on citizens to remain vigilant and proactive, Maraga reminded the state that true authority lies with the people.
“Prosperity will not come by selling our strategic assets but by empowering Kenyans. We remind the state that sovereignty belongs to the people.”
