Kibra MP Peter Orero Sparks Outrage After Traffic Violation and Confrontation with Larry Madowo
By Phanice Rono
Kibra Member of Parliament Peter Orero is under public scrutiny after a video surfaced online showing him violating traffic rules and engaging in a heated confrontation with CNN journalist Larry Madowo in Nairobi.
The video, which began circulating widely on social media on Thursday, October 9, shows a vehicle allegedly belonging to MP Orero driving on the wrong side of the road, an offence under Kenya’s Traffic Act. The incident reportedly occurred in Nairobi’s central business district.
According to Madowo, he blocked the MP’s vehicle in protest of the illegal maneuver, calling for accountability from public leaders. The situation escalated when Orero and his driver began hurling insults at the journalist, dismissing his efforts and taunting him to report the matter to President William Ruto.
“Peleka kwa Ruto... peleka kabisa! Takataka!!” ("Take it to Ruto... go ahead! Rubbish!") one of them is heard shouting in the clip.
In response, Madowo remained calm, saying:
“Sawa, ntapeleka kwa Ruto... juu hiyo ndiyo unaogopa pekee yake.”
("Okay, I’ll take it to him — is that the only thing you’re scared of?")
The incident sparked widespread criticism online, with many Kenyans accusing the MP of arrogance and abuse of power. Social media users expressed disappointment that a former educator, known for advocating discipline in schools, would behave in such a manner in public office.
Adding fuel to the fire, MP Orero did not issue an apology but instead posted a photo of himself planting a tree on his social media platforms with a caption that appeared to mock the incident:
“Take care of your environment, safisha takataka.”
("Clean up the trash.")
The post was widely interpreted as a veiled insult directed at Madowo, further angering the public.
Under Kenya’s Traffic Act, driving on the wrong side of the road is a traffic offence punishable by a fine of KSh 10,000 or imprisonment for up to six months.
In response to the uproar, Police Spokesperson Michael Muchiri said the matter was being taken seriously and confirmed that investigations would be launched.“No one is above the law. The law will take its course,” Muchiri stated, adding that the MP’s driver could face legal action for the violation.
The incident has reignited public debate over impunity among political leaders and calls for stricter enforcement of traffic laws — regardless of an individual’s political or social standing..
