Kakamega Residents Kill Man Accused of Murdering 5-Year-Old Girl
Tension gripped Nanderema village in Navakholo, Kakamega County, after enraged residents lynched a man accused of murdering a five-year-old girl whose body was discovered hidden inside a pit latrine at his home.
The suspect, identified as Yusuf Busolo, was cornered and beaten to death by an angry mob after the body of Emmaculate Nafula was found on his compound on Tuesday evening.
According to witnesses, Busolo allegedly lured the young girl by offering her sugarcane before she went missing. When she failed to return home, villagers mounted an intensive search that led them to the suspect’s residence, where they made the gruesome discovery.
The victim’s mother, Florence Nafula, said that other children had seen Busolo calling Emmaculate shortly before her disappearance. “They told us he was the last person seen with her. When we went to his home, he had already fled,” she said tearfully.
The discovery of the child’s body sparked outrage among residents, who quickly descended on the suspect after tracking him down. Despite attempts by a few elders to calm the crowd, the mob overpowered them and lynched Busolo before police could intervene.
Officers from Navakholo Police Station later arrived at the scene and moved both bodies to the Kakamega County Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations.
Confirming the incident, area police commander condemned the mob justice, urging the public to allow law enforcement agencies to handle criminal investigations.
“We understand the community’s anger, but taking the law into your own hands is not the solution. The suspect should have been handed over to police for due process,” the officer said.
Authorities have since launched investigations into both the murder of the child and the subsequent lynching.
The incident has left residents of Nanderema village in shock, with local leaders calling for enhanced security and community sensitization to prevent similar acts of violence.
