John Mwangi Munyiri Declares Bid for Nyeri Gubernatorial Seat

Former public servant John Mwangi Munyiri has officially declared his intention to contest the Nyeri gubernatorial seat in the upcoming general election.

Munyiri, who has previously worked with the Media Council of Kenya and the County Government of Nyeri, said he is driven by a desire to transform the county through accountable and development-oriented leadership.

The seat is currently held by Governor Mutahi Kahiga, whose term is nearing its end. Munyiri’s entry into the race is expected to inject fresh energy into Nyeri’s political scene as more aspirants eye the coveted position.

Speaking to journalists in Nyeri town on Thursday, Munyiri said he would soon announce the political party under which he will vie, adding that his campaign will focus on economic transformation, youth empowerment, and better service delivery.

“My decision to run for governor is based on my commitment to transform Nyeri into a model county,” Munyiri said. “I want to build on what has been achieved and ensure our people benefit from efficient governance and equal opportunities.”

He emphasized his experience in public service and communication as key strengths that will help him bridge the gap between government and the people.

“Having worked both at the Media Council of Kenya and within the County Government of Nyeri, I understand the importance of transparency, good governance, and effective communication in delivering results,” he noted.

Munyiri outlined his priorities, including boosting agriculture, supporting small businesses, expanding healthcare access, and improving infrastructure across the county.

Political observers say Munyiri’s declaration adds a new twist to the 2027 Nyeri gubernatorial race, which is expected to be hotly contested.

Munyiri said he will begin countywide consultations before unveiling his campaign team and political vehicle in the coming weeks.

“Nyeri is ready for a new chapter of visionary leadership,” he said. “Together, we can make that happen.”
