General Motors Unveils Plans for “Eyes-Off” Driving Technology by 2028

General Motors (GM) has revealed ambitious plans to introduce an “eyes-off” driving system in its future electric vehicles, marking a major step toward fully autonomous driving.

During the GM Forward event held this week, the automaker announced that the new technology will allow drivers to take their eyes off the road under specific highway conditions, with the vehicle safely handling steering, braking, and acceleration.

According to general motors, the system will be powered by a sensor-fusion setup combining lidar, radar, and cameras, ensuring more accurate road awareness than systems that rely solely on cameras.

The first model to feature this next-generation autonomy is expected to be the Cadillac Escalade IQ, with the technology scheduled for rollout in 2028.

While 2025 GM vehicles will continue to feature the company’s advanced “Super Cruise” hands-free system—which still requires driver attention—the new platform aims to go further by enabling true “eyes-off” functionality in mapped areas.

GM says the innovation is part of its broader strategy to redefine vehicle automation and safety through a unified software platform integrated with conversational AI and real-time decision-making.

If successful, the move could position General Motors among the first automakers to offer commercially available vehicles with approved eyes-off autonomy.
