Dianah Kamande HSC Celebrates 40 Years of FIDA-Kenya’s Fight for Women’s Rights

It was pomp, colour, and celebration as Widows’ Rights Ambassador Dianah Kamande, HSC, joined the Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA-Kenya) in commemorating 40 years of championing women’s rights and access to justice in Kenya.

The milestone event brought together prominent women leaders, human rights defenders, legal practitioners, and development partners to celebrate FIDA-Kenya’s four decades of impact in advancing gender equality, legal empowerment, and social transformation across the country.

Speaking during the ceremony, Ms. Kamande paid glowing tribute to FIDA-Kenya for its tireless efforts in providing free legal aid, spearheading advocacy and education programs, and ensuring that laws and institutions respond effectively to the needs of women.

“I walked to FIDA-Kenya as a young widow who had survived domestic violence,” Ms. Kamande recalled. “I didn’t just find my justice — it became justice for hundreds of thousands of widows across Kenya. This partnership has transformed lives and continues to inspire change.”

Ms. Kamande highlighted that her collaboration with FIDA-Kenya spans 13 years, during which the partnership has championed widows’ rights, expanded access to justice, and driven advocacy for gender-sensitive policies nationwide.

She lauded the organization for its steadfast leadership and unwavering commitment to building a just and inclusive society, free from discrimination and violence against women.

“We celebrate 40 years of unwavering service, resilience, and transformation. Live long, FIDA-Kenya,” she added.

Since its founding in 1985, FIDA-Kenya has been at the forefront of the women’s rights movement, providing critical legal services to thousands of women, influencing policy reforms, and shaping national conversations on gender equality.
