TopHill Hospital Partners with Uasin Gishu Security Agencies to Tackle Work-Related Health Issues Among Police Officers

In a significant step toward promoting occupational health and wellness among law enforcement officers, TopHill Hospital today hosted a high-level seminar bringing together senior security officials from Uasin Gishu County. The session, which was held at the hospital’s conference hall, focused on the prevention and early management of common occupational diseases that affect police officers and other security personnel.

The seminar, spearheaded by TopHill Hospital CEO Dr. Florentius Koech, was attended by County Commanders, Officers Commanding Stations (OCSs), Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers, and Administration Police (AP) commanders.

“Today, we’ve had a very important engagement with our county’s law enforcement leadership,” said Dr. Koech. “These are individuals who face high-stress environments daily. We’ve noticed that a significant number of officers who come to our hospital present with work-related conditions—especially lower back pain, chronic headaches, and mental stress. Rather than focusing only on treatment, we felt it was prudent to educate them on prevention.”

Dr. Koech emphasized that a proactive approach to health can greatly reduce the burden of disease among first responders, who often face physically and emotionally demanding situations. The seminar included a half-day series of interactive talks led by specialists from TopHill Hospital covering ergonomic practices, mental health awareness, emotional resilience, and lifestyle modifications that can reduce the risk of common occupational health issues.

“Out of every ten police officers who visit our hospital, two to three are usually suffering from issues related to back pain or stress disorders. These numbers are worrying,” Dr. Koech added. “Through such engagements, we hope to build awareness and enable our officers to be ambassadors of disease prevention in their workplaces and communities.”

The training provided practical guidance, including demonstrations on proper posture during office work and physical activity, stress management techniques, and the importance of seeking early psychological support. Officers were also educated on how everyday actions—like how one sits or lifts heavy items—can contribute to long-term health complications if not done correctly.

Law Enforcement Leaders Welcome Mental Health and Wellness Focus

Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi welcomed the initiative, highlighting the critical need for mental health support and physical wellness among officers, particularly given the traumatic nature of their work.

“We are usually the first responders to scenes of crime, and some of those scenes are extremely traumatizing,” said Commander Mwanthi. “This seminar on mental health, emotions, and even spiritual wellness is timely. It gives us tools to better cope with the demands of our job and take care of ourselves holistically.”

He added that the lessons learned would not remain at the senior level but would be cascaded down to junior officers, many of whom struggle with job-related stress and burnout. “We are going to share these insights with our colleagues at all levels, so that everyone benefits.”

A Model for Other Counties

The partnership between TopHill Hospital and the County’s security agencies has been lauded as a model that other counties should emulate, especially as concerns grow around the mental health and physical strain faced by frontline officers across the country.

According to health experts at TopHill, investing in preventive healthcare—especially in high-risk professions like policing—not only reduces healthcare costs in the long run but also boosts productivity, morale, and public safety outcomes.

As the country continues to prioritize mental health and wellness in all sectors, such collaborations between the healthcare sector and security agencies mark a crucial step in creating healthier workplaces and communities.
