KURA DG Eng. Silas Kinoti Urges Responsible Waste Management to Protect Road Infrastructure
By John Kariuki
Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) Director General Eng. Silas Kinoti has urged property owners to properly manage their waste systems to safeguard Kenya’s road network from unnecessary damage.
Kinoti acknowledged that while significant progress has been made in improving urban roads, challenges remain due to poor waste disposal practices. A key issue has been the illegal discharge of sewage into drainage systems, particularly after KURA contractors have cleaned and repaired them.
“This malpractice damages the very roads we strive to maintain,” Kinoti said, emphasizing that such actions compromise infrastructure longevity and increase maintenance costs.
He highlighted KURA’s continued collaboration with county governments to improve the road network and ensure safe, reliable transportation for Kenyans. However, he noted that sustainable infrastructure requires joint responsibility between government agencies and the public.
Kinoti appealed to property owners, especially in urban centers, to take ownership of waste management. “Let us work together to protect and preserve our roads for the benefit of all Kenyans,” he said.
The KURA chief reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to upgrading and maintaining urban roads, stressing that protecting drainage systems and preventing illegal sewage connections are crucial to achieving this goal.
