CECM Edward Sawe Champions Tree Planting and Youth Empowerment at Shirika Primary School

The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Lands, Housing, Physical Planning, and Urban Development, Edward Sawe, on Thursday led a spirited tree planting and sports empowerment drive at Shirika Primary School. The event brought together pupils and students from surrounding primary and secondary schools, underscoring the county’s commitment to environmental conservation and youth development.

As part of Uasin Gishu County’s broader ecological and wellness agenda, the initiative saw the distribution of sports balls to encourage physical activity among young people, while extensive tree planting activities promoted sustainability. The program supports Governor Jonathan Bii’s Nguzo Number 7, which emphasizes environmental stewardship through regular tree planting campaigns.

Speaking during the event, CECM Sawe called on young people to take up the mantle of environmental conservation, stressing that preserving nature is a shared responsibility that ensures a healthier future for generations to come.

Chief Officer for Environment Mark Some echoed these sentiments, highlighting the indispensable role trees play in sustaining life and combating climate change. “Every tree planted is an investment in cleaner air, water conservation, and a more resilient environment,” he said.

Other county officials present included Mary Kerich, Chief Officer for Housing and Urban Development, and Eng. Chris Mbevi from the County Climate Change Unit. Kerich linked environmental protection efforts to the Affordable Housing Program, noting that a clean and green environment complements the county’s vision of sustainable urban development.
