Busia Women Representative Catherine Omanyo Steps In to Support Vulnerable Residents of Kanjala Village

Busia County Women Representative, Catherine Omanyo, visited Kanjala village in Marachi North, Butula Subcounty, yesterday to assist a differently-abled woman living in a dangerously unstable house. Mary Oundo, who suffers from hearing impairment, was living in a dilapidated structure that posed an imminent risk to her safety.
The urgent intervention came after a concerned neighbour, Marita Nasalutsi, reached out to Representative Omanyo about Mary's plight. Marita, who lives in the same village, reported that Mary’s house was weak and could collapse at any time, leaving her without proper shelter.
Upon receiving the call, Omanyo immediately visited the area and assessed the situation. “When I saw the condition of Mary’s home, I knew immediate action was necessary,” said Omanyo. “It is heartbreaking to see members of our community live in such unsafe conditions, especially those with disabilities.”
During her visit, Omanyo distributed building materials, including iron sheets, to help fortify Mary’s house and prevent further damage. The iron sheets will serve as a much-needed upgrade to the shanty structure, offering the protection Mary so desperately needs.
In addition to supporting Mary, Omanyo took the opportunity to distribute blankets to elderly residents in the area. “Many elderly people in Kanjala village are also in desperate need of basic items like blankets to keep warm at night,” she noted. “It’s crucial that we support our seniors, who have contributed so much to our society.”
Omanyo’s intervention has been welcomed by the local community, with many residents praising her quick response. “I am very grateful to the Women Representative for visiting and providing assistance,” said Marita Nasalutsi. “It’s not every day that someone takes action when they hear about a problem in our village.”
Omanyo emphasized the importance of community solidarity and the need for continued efforts to address the challenges faced by the most vulnerable members of society, particularly those with disabilities and the elderly. She promised to continue advocating for more sustainable solutions to improve housing, healthcare, and social services for vulnerable groups in Busia County.
The visit is part of Omanyo's ongoing commitment to supporting marginalized groups and addressing the basic needs of the county’s residents.
“We must ensure that no one in our community is left behind,” Omanyo concluded. “I will continue working to bring about lasting change in the lives of the most vulnerable members of Busia County.”
