A sombre mood engulfed Mikindani Primary School on Thursday evening after a tragic road accident claimed the life of a beloved teacher and left 12 pupils injured.

The accident occurred on July 3, 2025, as a school bus carrying pupils and a teacher from Mikindani Primary School was returning from a music and drama festival held in Voi. According to eyewitnesses, the bus collided with another vehicle under circumstances that are still under investigation.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene promptly and administered first aid before rushing the injured pupils to Mikindani Medical Centre. Of the 12 injured children, two were reported to be in serious condition, while the rest sustained minor injuries and are currently stable.

Tragically, the teacher, whose identity has not yet been released pending notification of the family, succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. Her body has been taken to Coast General Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Authorities have launched a full investigation to determine the exact cause of the collision. Police have urged motorists to exercise extra caution, especially during school transport activities.

In the wake of the tragedy, local leaders visited the school and hospital to offer their support. Jomvu Member of Parliament Badi Twalib, speaking at Mikindani Medical Centre, assured families that all hospital bills for the injured children will be fully covered. He also pledged to provide counseling services to help pupils and staff cope with the emotional impact of the incident.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of a dedicated teacher. We are doing everything we can to stand with the affected families and the entire school community during this painful time,” said MP Twalib.

Mikindani MCA Jactone Madialo also offered words of comfort to the injured pupils and their families, describing the teacher as a “pillar of inspiration” who was loved by many.

The school has suspended activities to allow pupils, staff, and families to mourn and heal. Grief counselors have already been deployed to provide psychological support.

As the community comes to terms with the devastating loss, there is a shared call for improved road safety and stricter regulations on school transport to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
