A family in Kirinyaga County is mourning the sudden loss of three of its members following a fatal road accident on Wednesday morning along the Mwea–Embu highway.

The victims, identified as 20-year-old Jackson Mwangi, his mother Susan Wanjiru, and grandmother Beth Wanjiru, aged 75, died on the spot after their motorcycle collided head-on with an oncoming matatu near the Research area. The family was returning home from Wang’uru Law Courts at the time of the accident.

According to a police report from Mwea West Sub-county, Jackson was riding the motorcycle with his mother and grandmother as pillion passengers when he veered into the opposite lane, colliding with a matatu traveling from Nairobi to Meru.

The matatu driver, Michael Njue, told police the motorcycle suddenly appeared in his lane, leaving him no time to avoid the collision. The motorcycle was trapped under the matatu, causing the fatal impact.

Jackson Mwangi had recently been released from Mwea GK Prison after serving 12 days on a defilement charge. His grandmother had secured his release by posting a bond using a title deed. The family had visited the courts for a mention of the case before the tragic accident occurred.

Family spokesperson John Gakotho expressed profound grief over the loss. “It is a tragic day for our village. Losing three family members at once is unbearable,” he said.

Community leaders, including lay leader Peter Gaitho of ACK Rukanga Church and Pastor Wainaina Ngirigaca of AIPCA Church, have called on well-wishers to support the family in raising funds for the burial.

Beatrice Mukami Maina, Susan’s sister, shared the family’s shock: “We are still in shock. We don’t even know where to begin.”

The bodies have been taken to a local mortuary as burial arrangements are being made. The family has appealed for assistance from local leaders and the public to help cover funeral expenses.
