President Ruto Inspects Revamped Kasarani Stadium, Visits Harambee Stars Ahead of CHAN 2024

President William Ruto on Tuesday inspected the newly refurbished Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, affirming Kenya’s readiness to host the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) set to kick off next month.

Accompanied by Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba and Football Kenya Federation (FKF) officials, the President toured the stadium’s upgraded facilities before joining the Harambee Stars during their training session at the venue.

Addressing the media, President Ruto expressed satisfaction with the progress made in revamping the stadium, describing it as a "world-class facility" that reflects Kenya’s growing commitment to sports development and continental excellence.

“We are ready to host CHAN 2024. This revamped stadium demonstrates our resolve to provide modern, high-quality infrastructure for our athletes and fans,” said Ruto.

The President commended the Harambee Stars for their determination and discipline, urging them to make the country proud in the upcoming tournament.

“To our players, know that you carry the hopes of millions of Kenyans. We believe in you, and we will stand with you all the way,” he added.

The government has invested significantly in sports infrastructure over the past year, with Kasarani and Nyayo Stadium undergoing major renovations ahead of CHAN and other international fixtures. Kenya was selected as one of the co-hosts for CHAN 2024, a biennial tournament organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and featuring players drawn exclusively from local leagues.

President Ruto emphasized that sports remains a key pillar of his administration’s youth empowerment and job creation agenda, noting that enhanced investment in sports can transform lives and elevate Kenya’s profile globally.

The Harambee Stars are in the final stages of their preparations, with friendly matches scheduled in the coming weeks. Kenya will be hosting Group B matches at Kasarani, with thousands of fans expected to attend.

Kenya last hosted a major continental tournament in 1988. CHAN 2024 marks a return to the continental football stage for the East African nation.
