Multi-Stakeholder Roundtable on Road Safety Held at Jogoo House

In a bid to strengthen road safety and address rising concerns over traffic-related fatalities, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Douglas Kanja, on Thursday, July 3, 2025, convened a high-level multi-stakeholder roundtable at Jogoo House ‘A’ in Nairobi.

Chaired by the Principal Assistant to the IG, Mr. Mathew Kutoh, SAIG, the strategic meeting brought together a cross-section of key actors in the road safety ecosystem, including representatives from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), the Motorists Association of Kenya, and the Association of Kenya Insurers (AKI), among others.

The roundtable aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of existing road safety policies and forge a collaborative path forward in reducing traffic incidents. Stakeholders identified critical gaps in the current road safety management framework and emphasized the importance of a harmonized approach to policy implementation, enforcement, and public awareness.

"We are at a critical juncture where stakeholder unity is essential to curbing the unacceptable rise in road accidents," said Mr. Kutoh. "The goal is to restore public confidence and ensure our roads are safe for all users."

Also present were senior members of the Kenya Police Service, including the Director of Operations, Mr. Adamson Bungei, SAIG; Director of Reforms, Mr. John Kamau, AIG; Commandant of the Traffic Police Unit, Mr. Fredrick Ochieng’, AIG; and the Staff Officer for Operations (Traffic), Mr. John Nyoike, CP.

Participants proposed several actionable strategies, including enhanced data-sharing between institutions, stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, capacity-building for officers, and intensified public education campaigns on road safety.

The National Police Service reiterated its unwavering commitment to upholding road safety and enforcing traffic laws across the country.

"As a Service, we remain fully dedicated to maintaining law and order on Kenyan roads, and this forum marks a renewed pledge to work collectively toward safer transport systems," read a statement from the Inspector General's office.

The roundtable marks a significant step toward coordinated stakeholder engagement and is expected to yield a series of reforms aimed at reversing the alarming trends on Kenyan roads.
