Kenya Hands Over Refurbished Kasarani Stadium for CHAN 2024, Set to Host Final

Kenya has officially handed over the newly refurbished Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) ahead of the much-anticipated 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The iconic stadium will serve as a key venue for the tournament, hosting Group A matches as well as the grand final on August 30. The handover marks a major milestone for Kenya as it prepares to co-host the continental football spectacle alongside East African neighbours.

“This reaffirms our standing as a premier destination for international competitions,” said Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Hon. Salim Mvurya, during the handover ceremony. “Kasarani is ready, and Kenya is ready.”

The tournament will officially kick off on August 2, with Harambee Stars opening their Group A campaign against DR Congo on August 3 at the revamped Kasarani Stadium. The event is expected to attract thousands of fans and global attention as East Africa hosts the CHAN tournament for the first time.

The stadium underwent extensive upgrades, including modern pitch improvements, player facilities, fan amenities, digital scoreboards, and enhanced security and accessibility features — all meeting CAF’s international standards.

The successful completion of the renovations and timely handover of Kasarani underscores Kenya’s commitment to delivering world-class infrastructure and promoting the growth of football on the continent.

 “This is our moment to show the world what East African football is all about,” said CS Mvurya. “We welcome Africa to Kenya.”

The CHAN tournament, which features national teams made up exclusively of players active in their domestic leagues, will run from August 2 to 30, with matches held across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

All eyes now turn to Nairobi as Kenya prepares not only to host but also to compete, with Harambee Stars aiming to make a strong statement on home soil.
