Kalonzo Condemns Chwele Chaos, Says “Primitive Politics Is Dying”

Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has strongly condemned the violent disruptions witnessed in Chwele, Bungoma County, during a public rally organized by the United Opposition, terming the incident as “the dying embers of primitive politics” in Kenya.

In a sharply worded statement issued on Thursday evening, Musyoka called out National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, accusing him of tolerating and possibly sanctioning political thuggery against opposition leaders and supporters in the region.

“Mr. Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, hear the people of Chwele, Western, and Kenya clearly: The United Opposition won’t be intimidated by your #WanTam-sanctioned stone-throwing goons. Not now, not today, not ever,” said Kalonzo.

The fracas, which disrupted a planned opposition engagement with residents, reportedly involved groups of youth who pelted stones and attempted to break up the gathering. No serious injuries were reported, but the incident drew outrage from various opposition figures who accused local leaders of sponsoring political hooliganism.

Kalonzo said the opposition would not be deterred by acts of intimidation and violence, adding that Kenyans are increasingly rejecting outdated tactics aimed at silencing dissent.

“What we witnessed in Chwele were the dying embers of the practice of primitive politics in Kenya. That era is over. The people want issue-based leadership and democratic space for all voices,” he added.

The former Vice President emphasized the United Opposition’s resolve to tour every part of the country—including traditional government strongholds—to engage citizens on matters of governance, economic hardship, and constitutional reform.

Leaders allied to the United Opposition, including DAP-K party officials and grassroots organizers, have vowed to return to Chwele in the coming days, promising a peaceful yet firm show of presence.

As political temperatures continue to rise across the country, calls are growing for leaders on both sides of the political divide to uphold democratic principles and protect the right to assembly.
