Hon Waithera Chege Rises to Shield South B Children from Growing Abuse Cases
By John Kariuki
Nairobi Member of County Assembly for South B Ward, Hon Waithera Chege, has taken a compassionate yet firm stance to protect children from a rising wave of abuse cases in her community. In recent weeks, South B has seen an alarming increase in reports of defilement and sodomy involving minors—incidents that have left families shaken and the community searching for solutions.
To respond swiftly and collectively, Hon Waithera convened a community meeting that brought together parents, teachers, human rights advocates, and police officers. The gathering served as a platform for truth, healing, and practical action. Emotions ran high as shocking cases were shared, including one where a 40-year-old man allegedly lured a young boy using inappropriate content on his phone before committing abuse.
“This cannot continue,” Hon Waithera said during the forum. “Our children deserve safety, love, and protection. As parents, teachers, and leaders, we must stand united. I will walk with every affected family to ensure their children get justice.”
Her message was one of hope, courage, and unity urging the community not to stay silent but to speak out and support one another. She also lauded the efforts of the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), who pledged to offer free legal representation to affected families. FIDA’s Elizabeth Mwaniki emphasized that no parent should shield an abuser, saying, “Protecting a perpetrator is wrong and must be addressed.”
The local police, represented by OCS Mohamed Nuur, encouraged residents to practice community policing and remain alert to signs of abuse. He reminded the audience that reporting suspicious behavior early could save lives.
FIDA used the opportunity to educate the public about their rights, the definition of defilement, how to report cases, and how the justice system works. This awareness campaign aims to empower families and reduce the stigma often associated with abuse.
Hon Waithera’s leadership has been calm yet decisive. She has vowed to follow through with not only legal action but also mentorship programs, safe spaces for affected children, and long-term strategies for prevention.
Her compassionate response and ability to unite people around a common cause have positioned her as a trusted and inspiring leader. In South B, she is not just a representative, she is a voice of protection, healing, and justice.
