Canada Issues Travel Advisory Ahead of Saba Saba Protests in Kenya

The Canadian Embassy in Kenya has issued a travel advisory warning its citizens residing in or planning to visit Kenya about potential security risks ahead of the planned Saba Saba Day protests on July 7, 2025.

In a statement released on July 3, the embassy cautioned that demonstrations are expected to take place in Nairobi and across Kenya, with possible gatherings occurring before and after the scheduled date. The advisory noted that recent protests have turned violent, involving incidents of looting and shootings that have resulted in casualties.

“Demonstrations are scheduled to take place in Nairobi across Kenya on July 7, 2025. Gatherings and demonstrations may also occur before or after this date. Recent demonstrations have been violent, with incidents of looting and shootings resulting in casualties,” the statement reads.

The embassy further warned that disruptions to transportation, telecommunications, and internet services could occur as demonstrations spread. Authorities may also impose curfews and restrict movement without prior notice.

Canadian nationals were advised to avoid participating in demonstrations, steer clear of government buildings, and monitor local media for timely updates. The embassy urged compliance with directions from local police and anticipated heightened security presence across affected areas.

In addition to protest-related risks, the advisory highlighted security concerns in several regions, including Nairobi, Naivasha, Nanyuki, Meru, Narok, the Kenyan coast, Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa—areas near the Somalia border with elevated terrorism threats.

"There is also an increased risk of kidnapping in the northeastern Kenyan counties of Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa bordering Somalia and the coastal areas of Lamu County," the embassy noted.

The notice referenced previous incidents involving improvised explosive devices, including attacks near the Dadaab refugee camp located 80 kilometers from the Somali border, which resulted in injuries and fatalities.

Additionally, a 50-kilometer radius surrounding the Ethiopian border was described as hazardous due to ongoing cross-border conflicts.

The embassy also warned that government buildings, schools, places of worship, shopping centers, and hotels could be potential targets of attacks.

Citizens were encouraged to exercise extreme caution and stay informed as the security situation evolves.
