Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has accused former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of orchestrating a campaign of intimidation and fear in the Mt. Kenya region, alleging that the former deputy president is using threats and violence to target businesspeople.

In a strongly worded statement, Murkomen claimed that remarks made by Gachagua had reinforced the government's concerns that the former deputy president is deliberately creating "an atmosphere of fear and siege" in the region.

According to the Interior CS, the alleged objective is to intimidate leading businesspeople into giving in to demands, warning that those who refuse to comply risk having their businesses targeted by gangs involved in looting and destruction.

Murkomen further described Gachagua as "the biggest threat to national unity and the economy of our country," accusing him of engaging in activities that could undermine peace and economic stability.

The Cabinet Secretary said the government's security agencies are closely monitoring Gachagua's public statements and alleged activities, adding that authorities are committed to safeguarding lives, property, and businesses across the country.

"His utterances and criminal activities are closely being monitored by our security agencies and we shall do everything to ensure that the people and their properties are protected," Murkomen said.

The remarks come amid heightened political tensions as leaders continue to exchange accusations over security, governance, and the political direction of the Mt. Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.
