 A political storm erupted on Tuesday after the United Alternative Government released a lengthy and sharply worded open letter directly addressed to President William Ruto, accusing his administration of abandoning constitutional accountability, engaging in divisive politics, and failing to address the economic hardships facing ordinary Kenyans.

In the letter, the group challenged President Ruto to take personal responsibility for the performance of his administration, arguing that the Presidency cannot delegate accountability to party officials or political surrogates.

"The buck therefore stops with you," the letter states, insisting that officials of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) who recently criticized former President Uhuru Kenyatta were effectively speaking in defense of the current administration and under the authority of the party leader, President Ruto.

UDA Letter Sparks Fierce Response

The United Alternative Government described the recent UDA communication targeting former President Uhuru Kenyatta as "reckless, insulting, diversionary and deeply disappointing," claiming it reflected an administration that had "run out of explanations for the growing frustrations of the Kenyan people."

The group further accused senior figures in the ruling party of reviving political narratives that risk deepening regional and social divisions, warning against rhetoric reminiscent of some of Kenya's most polarized political periods.

The letter argues that the Constitution of Kenya was specifically designed to move the country away from politics based on division, grievances, and manufactured enemies.

"You Were There"

One of the strongest sections of the letter focuses on President Ruto's decade-long tenure as Deputy President under the Jubilee administration.

The authors rejected attempts to distance the current administration from past government decisions, reminding the President that he served as the second-highest-ranking official in government for ten years.

"You sat in Cabinet. You defended government policy, you launched projects, you campaigned on Jubilee achievements," the letter says.

In a line likely to attract widespread public attention, the authors wrote:

"You cannot sit at the dining table for ten years, enjoy the meal, then later claim you were merely passing by the kitchen."

Cost of Living Takes Center Stage

The letter repeatedly returned to concerns about the cost of living, unemployment, healthcare, and taxation.

The group argued that while government officials cite economic indicators and policy reforms, many Kenyans continue to struggle with rising fuel costs, electricity prices, school fees, healthcare expenses, and joblessness.

"Kenyans do not eat statistics. They eat food," the letter stated.

The authors questioned whether economic stabilization efforts had translated into tangible improvements for ordinary households and challenged the administration to demonstrate measurable benefits in citizens' daily lives.

Questions Over Healthcare and Housing

The United Alternative Government also raised concerns about the implementation of the Social Health Authority (SHA), claiming many patients and healthcare providers remain uncertain about coverage and payment structures following the replacement of NHIF.

On affordable housing, the group called for greater transparency, demanding publication of detailed records showing how much money has been collected, how funds have been spent, the number of completed housing units, occupancy levels, and jobs created through the program.

Rule of Law and Constitutional Concerns

A significant portion of the letter focused on constitutional governance, judicial independence, and allegations of increasing political intolerance.

The authors criticized what they described as a growing pattern of disregard for court orders and warned against any erosion of public confidence in the judiciary.

The letter also expressed concern about reports of abductions, excessive force during demonstrations, and allegations that citizens increasingly struggle to distinguish between legitimate law enforcement operations and politically motivated intimidation.

The group argued that constitutional rights to free expression, assembly, and political participation must be protected regardless of political affiliation.

Call for Presidential Accountability

Throughout the document, the authors emphasized that the President must personally answer for government performance rather than relying on party officials and spokespersons.

"The people of Kenya elected a President, not a chain of spokespersons," the letter states.

The authors urged President Ruto to focus on governance rather than political battles with former leaders, arguing that voters elected him to reduce the cost of living, create jobs, improve healthcare, strengthen education, and protect constitutional freedoms.

"The Responsibility Is Yours"

The letter concludes with one of its strongest political messages:

"Today, William Ruto is President. UDA is the ruling party. Kenya Kwanza is the government. The responsibility is yours. No excuses. No scapegoats. No endless campaigns. Govern."

The statement is expected to fuel national political debate as the administration continues to defend its record on economic reforms, healthcare restructuring, affordable housing, and public sector transformation.

As of publication, neither the Presidency nor UDA had formally responded to the open letter.
