Kiambu Boosts Grassroots Football with Sh2.7 Million Lifeline as Over 200 Teams Set for Revival

Kiambu County has injected Sh2.7 million into grassroots football in a major move aimed at revitalizing local sports and strengthening youth talent development across the region.

The funding, which will benefit more than 200 local football teams under the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Kiambu Branch, is designed to cover team affiliation fees—an expense that has long been a barrier preventing many community clubs from participating in county and regional leagues.

The initiative is expected to significantly boost participation in structured competitions by removing one of the key financial hurdles that has historically forced several teams to drop out of the league system.

Speaking during the release of the funds, Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi said the investment reflects the county government’s broader commitment to youth empowerment through sports.

“Football is more than just a game as it unites our communities and offers a vibrant pathway for youth empowerment, opening doors for our youth to excel and achieve their dreams. That is why the county government remains committed to investing in grassroots sports,” said the governor.

The FKF Kiambu Branch welcomed the funding, describing it as a major breakthrough for local football development. Branch Chairman Danson Njuguna noted that the support will immediately revive team participation and restore competitiveness across the county’s leagues.

He revealed that the governor had pledged the Sh2.7 million commitment in December, with the funds now officially released in May.

“The talent is there, but many local teams are held back by basic operational costs like affiliation fees, which has unfortunately forced clubs out of competitions and reduced overall participation in our leagues,” Njuguna said.

With the new sponsorship in place, hundreds of teams are expected to rejoin competitions, giving a fresh boost to grassroots football and expanding opportunities for young players to showcase their talent.

The move is being hailed as a timely intervention that could reshape the county’s sports landscape and strengthen the pipeline of football talent emerging from Kiambu.

Kimani Wamatangi led the initiative, which is being implemented through the Football Kenya Federation Kiambu Branch.
