Subsidised AI Programme Launched to Boost Dairy Farming in Kakamega
Farmers in Kakamega County are set to benefit from a new subsidised artificial insemination (AI) programme aimed at improving dairy productivity and strengthening the livestock sector.
The initiative, rolled out by the County Government of Kakamega in partnership with FIPS Africa, will enable dairy farmers to access conventional semen AI services at a reduced cost of KES 700. The programme is designed to make quality breeding services more affordable and accessible, particularly for smallholder farmers across the county.
According to county officials, the services will be delivered through a network of extension officers working alongside licensed private veterinary providers. This approach is expected to ensure efficient service delivery and wider coverage across all wards.
In addition to subsidised services, the programme includes a strong focus on farmer training. Beneficiaries will receive guidance on animal husbandry, fodder production, and best practices to improve dairy performance and overall farm profitability.
The launch event brought together key stakeholders in the livestock sector, including representatives from the Kakamega County Dairy Development Corporation (KDDC) and the Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre (KAGRIC), as well as both public and private AI service providers. The collaboration highlights a coordinated effort to strengthen the dairy value chain in the region.
Speaking during the launch, County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Cooperatives, Mophat Mandela, said the programme aligns with Governor Fernandes Barasa’s development agenda, which prioritises service delivery, accountability, and tangible benefits for farmers.
County leaders expressed optimism that the initiative will lead to improved livestock breeds, increased milk production, and higher household incomes, while contributing to long-term agricultural sustainability in Kakamega County.
The programme marks a significant step toward empowering farmers at the grassroots level and enhancing the overall resilience of the dairy sector in the county.
