KNH Doctors Successfully Perform Complex Six-Hour Heart Surgery in Major Boost for Local Healthcare
A team of doctors at Kenyatta National Hospital has successfully performed a complex six-hour heart surgery on a 35-year-old patient, highlighting the growing capacity of Kenya’s healthcare system to handle advanced cardiac procedures locally.
The life-saving operation was conducted through a collaboration between specialists from Kenya and Egypt, demonstrating the importance of international medical partnerships in strengthening specialized healthcare services in the country.
According to the hospital, the patient was suffering from severe heart complications linked to long-term valve disease, which had also caused enlargement of the upper chamber of the heart.
During the intricate procedure, surgeons carried out a mitral valve replacement, repaired the tricuspid valve, and reduced the enlarged upper heart chamber to improve the patient’s heart function.
Doctors utilized a heart-lung machine to maintain blood circulation and oxygen supply throughout the surgery while the patient’s heart was temporarily stopped — a standard process in major open-heart procedures.
Medical experts involved in the surgery described the operation as successful, noting that the patient is recovering well under close observation.
The procedure has been hailed as a major milestone for local healthcare, especially at a time when many Kenyans still believe advanced cardiac treatment can only be accessed abroad.
Health professionals say the successful surgery sends a strong message that world-class medical care is increasingly available within the country, reducing the financial and emotional burden many families face when forced to seek treatment overseas.
The collaboration between KNH and Egyptian cardiac specialists is also expected to enhance skills transfer and strengthen Kenya’s capacity to handle more complex heart conditions locally.
The achievement underscores ongoing efforts by Kenyatta National Hospital to position itself as a leading regional referral facility for specialized treatment and advanced surgical care.
