Government Sets Up Ebola Treatment Centers as DRC Outbreak Raises Regional Concerns
By Margaret' Naishorua
Kenya has stepped up its preparedness against Ebola by establishing specialized isolation and treatment facilities in key hospitals across the country as the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to raise concerns in the region.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale announced that dedicated Ebola response units have been set up at Kenyatta National Hospital, the Kenya National Police Hospital, and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital. The facilities are aimed at ensuring rapid detection, isolation, and treatment of any suspected Ebola cases.
To strengthen frontline defenses, the government has also identified additional response sites in more than 10 high-risk border counties. These facilities are expected to enhance the country's ability to respond swiftly should the virus cross into Kenya.
In a further boost to national preparedness, Kenya is partnering with the United States government to establish another Ebola monitoring and response facility at a military installation in Laikipia County. According to Duale, the partnership will enhance disease surveillance, laboratory testing capacity, emergency preparedness, medical supplies, and rapid response mechanisms.
Duale reassured Kenyans that the government remains vigilant and is taking proactive measures to protect public health amid the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the DRC. He noted that Kenya's position as a major regional hub for trade, travel, and commerce makes it essential to maintain strong disease prevention and response systems.
The Health CS said the investments being made today will not only strengthen Ebola preparedness but also improve Kenya's overall health security through better laboratory infrastructure, stronger surveillance networks, reliable supply chains, and a well-trained health workforce capable of handling future disease outbreaks.
Health officials continue to urge the public to remain informed and cooperate with health authorities as the country works to prevent the spread of infectious diseases and safeguard communities nationwide.
