From the Ring to the Table: Matiang’i Meets Forgotten Boxing Heroes in Nairobi

A simple shared meal in Kenyatta Market turned into a powerful conversation about dignity, legacy, and the future of Kenyan sports.

On Wednesday afternoon, Fred Matiang’i, Deputy Party Leader and presidential candidate under Jubilee Party, sat down with members of the Former Professional Boxers of Kenya in Nairobi—a group of once-celebrated athletes whose glory days in the ring have long faded.

Away from the roar of crowds and flashing lights, the meeting offered a rare moment of recognition for fighters who once carried the nation’s hopes but now face life with limited support.

Over plates of local delicacies, the conversation quickly shifted from nostalgia to reality.

Many of the retired boxers shared their struggles—life after sport marked by financial hardship, lack of medical care, and minimal institutional backing despite years of representing Kenya on national and international stages.

Dr. Matiang’i acknowledged their concerns, describing the situation as a reflection of deeper gaps in how the country manages and supports its sporting talent.

“The welfare of our athletes must be a priority—not just during their active years, but long after they leave the spotlight,” he noted.

The engagement underscored Jubilee’s broader agenda to reform the sports sector by creating structured systems that identify, nurture, and protect talent while ensuring athletes can build sustainable livelihoods.

For the former boxers, the visit was more than a political stop—it was a moment of being seen and heard.

“We fought for this country,” one retired boxer quietly remarked. “All we ask is not to be forgotten.”

As Kenya continues to celebrate its sporting heroes, the meeting served as a reminder that behind every medal and victory lies a human story—one that does not end when the final bell rings.
