DCI Cracks Down on Viral Hate Speech as Kayole Suspect Arrested Over Explosive Online Utterances

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have arrested a 33-year-old suspect linked to viral inflammatory utterances circulating on social media platforms in what authorities describe as a major threat to public peace, national cohesion and stability.

The suspect, identified as Evans Onyango Kawala, also known online as “Kidero Jasuba,” was apprehended during a coordinated security operation conducted by officers from the Operations Support Unit (OSU) in the Shujaa Mall area of Kayole, Nairobi.

According to the DCI, the suspect had allegedly published and circulated highly inciteful content online, attracting widespread attention and concern from members of the public as the clips and statements rapidly spread across different social media platforms.

Security agencies termed the content dangerous and capable of fueling tension, hatred and unrest if left unchecked.

In a statement, the DCI confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody undergoing processing ahead of his arraignment in court.

“The suspect was arrested following investigations into inflammatory public utterances that went viral on social media platforms, with content deemed highly inciteful and a serious threat to public cohesion and national stability,” the agency stated.

Authorities did not immediately disclose the exact charges the suspect is expected to face, but investigators indicated that the case touches on offences related to incitement, hate speech and misuse of digital platforms.

The arrest has since sparked widespread debate online, with Kenyans expressing mixed reactions over increasing cases of inflammatory content being circulated through social media channels.

The DCI warned members of the public against making reckless statements or sharing content likely to incite violence, spread hatred or undermine peaceful coexistence among communities.

The agency emphasized that freedom of expression must be exercised responsibly and within the limits of the law.

“The DCI cautions the public against making public utterances or disseminating content that incites violence, spreads hatred or undermines peace and national unity. Such acts amount to serious offences and those found culpable will face firm legal action in accordance with the law,” the statement added.

Security experts say the growing influence of social media has made it easier for inflammatory content to spread quickly, posing serious challenges to national security and public order.

The latest arrest comes amid heightened concern by authorities over the misuse of online platforms to spread divisive narratives, misinformation and hate speech capable of triggering unrest.

Analysts note that Kenyan authorities have in recent years intensified surveillance and enforcement measures targeting cyber-related offences, especially content considered harmful to public peace and national unity.

Human rights groups, however, continue to urge security agencies to balance enforcement with constitutional protections on freedom of expression, warning against misuse of cybercrime laws to suppress dissenting opinions.

Even so, the DCI maintains that any content deemed to threaten national cohesion or encourage violence will attract swift legal action regardless of the platform used.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court once investigations and processing are completed.
