CHERUTO UNVEILS BOLD AGRICULTURE BLUEPRINT TO TRANSFORM Nandi Farming Sector
By Emmanuel Kipkoech
Aspiring Nandi County Woman Representative Sharon Cheruto has unveiled an ambitious agriculture empowerment plan aimed at boosting farm productivity, increasing incomes, and creating opportunities for women and youth ahead of next year's general election.
Speaking during a meeting with residents, Cheruto described agriculture as the backbone of Nandi County's economy and pledged to champion policies and programs that will directly benefit farmers across the county.
She said her proposed agenda will focus on improving access to quality seeds, fertilizers, and modern farming technologies while expanding training opportunities for farmers.
“My goal is to help farmers increase their production and earn more income from their hard work,” Cheruto said. “Agriculture has the power to create jobs and improve the lives of many families in our county.”
Cheruto emphasized the importance of equipping farmers with modern skills through regular training programs on climate-smart agriculture and sustainable farming practices. She noted that embracing innovation is key to improving yields and addressing the effects of climate change.
The Woman Representative hopeful also pledged to work closely with financial institutions to facilitate affordable credit for farmers, enabling them to invest in their farms and agribusiness ventures.
“We want farmers to have the knowledge and resources they need to succeed,” she said. “With proper support, farming can become more profitable and attractive, especially to young people.”
As part of her plan, Cheruto promised to help farmers access better markets for their produce and support initiatives aimed at reducing post-harvest losses through improved storage facilities and value-addition programs.
She further highlighted the critical role women play in agriculture, promising to strengthen women-led cooperative groups and introduce mentorship programs to empower female farmers economically.
“Women play a major role in agriculture, and they deserve opportunities to grow and expand their farming activities,” she noted.
Residents who attended the meeting welcomed the proposals, expressing optimism that increased support for the agricultural sector could improve livelihoods and spur economic growth in the county.
Cheruto reaffirmed her commitment to working closely with farmers if elected, saying their concerns and ideas would guide her efforts.
“If elected, I will work closely with farmers to address their challenges and create lasting solutions,” she said. “Together, we can build a stronger and more prosperous Nandi County.”
