University of Embu Student Stabbed to Death, Protests Erupt Over Insecurity

A pall of grief and anger hung over the University of Embu community after the lifeless body of Eric Cheruiyot, a student at the institution, was discovered late on Saturday night, March 1, following a stabbing attack that has shaken students and residents alike.

According to preliminary information, Cheruiyot — who was returning to his accommodation from the university campus — was confronted by unknown assailants and stabbed during the encounter. Police suspect the attack may have been linked to an attempted robbery, though investigations are ongoing as authorities pursue leads and seek to identify those responsible.

His death has sparked outrage among students, many of whom took to the streets of Embu town on Monday, demanding urgent action to tackle rising insecurity in areas surrounding the university. Demonstrators highlighted glaring safety concerns, including poor street lighting and scant security patrols, factors they say have left learners vulnerable to criminal attacks after dark.

“I was a humble, disciplined and focused student who was just working hard to achieve my dreams,” one of Cheruiyot’s classmates said, echoing widespread grief among peers who described him as a promising young man whose life was cut tragically short.

Local leaders have also reacted strongly to the incident. Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji condemned the killing and called for immediate security interventions in Kangaru and the wider Embu area. He said he has engaged with security agencies to boost patrols and improve infrastructure — particularly street lighting — that could deter criminal activity around the university precinct.

Cheruiyot’s body was taken to the mortuary pending a post‑mortem examination as police urge anyone with information on the attackers to come forward. The incident has reignited debates on campus safety nationwide, with students and parents urging authorities to prioritize protective measures to prevent further loss of life.
