Governor Wanga and Deputy Magwanga Clash Over Cabinet Shake-Up

 By Collins Wasike

A political storm is brewing in Homa Bay County following a public fallout between Governor Gladys Wanga and her deputy, Oyugi Magwanga. The rift, which had been simmering beneath the surface, erupted after Governor Wanga issued an executive order on December 1, 2025, stripping Magwanga of his additional role as County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Agriculture.

The move came in the wake of the Kasipul constituency by-election, where Magwanga openly defied the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party line by supporting independent candidate Philip Aroko. Governor Wanga, who also serves as ODM’s national chairperson, had backed the party’s official candidate, Boyd Were, who ultimately won the seat.

In response to his removal, Magwanga issued a strongly worded statement condemning the governor’s actions as “blatant impunity.” He criticized the closure of three offices under his purview, arguing that such decisions disrupt essential services to the people of Homa Bay. “Political differences should not be allowed to interfere with service delivery,” he said, urging the governor to recommit to the electorate’s interests.

Governor Wanga, however, defended her decision as part of a broader cabinet reshuffle aimed at aligning her administration with her development agenda. Danish Onyango has since been appointed as the Acting CEC for Agriculture, in addition to his current role overseeing Roads and Infrastructure.

The public disagreement has sparked concern among residents and political observers, with many calling for reconciliation between the two leaders. As the county grapples with the implications of this political standoff, questions linger about the future of their working relationship and the stability of Wanga’s administration.

With tensions high, all eyes remain on Homa Bay’s leadership to see whether unity or further division will define the county’s political landscape.
