Residents of Kapsoya, Kaptagat, and Tarakwa Wards have urged the county government to prioritize the rehabilitation of key access roads damaged by recent heavy rains. In response, the Uasin Gishu County Department of Roads, Transport, and Public Works has intensified infrastructure upgrades across the region.

On Thursday, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Roads, Dr. Abraham Serem, alongside Chief Officer Geoffrey Tanui, led an inspection tour of several flood-affected roads in Tarakwa and Kapsoya Wards. The visit comes amid growing concern over impassable routes caused by waterlogging, erosion, and poor drainage.

Speaking during the tour, Dr. Serem reaffirmed the county’s commitment to swiftly restoring mobility and improving the road network in line with Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii’s Nguzo Kumi development blueprint. The road projects fall under Pillar Six of the agenda, which prioritizes infrastructure development to boost connectivity and stimulate local economic activities.

“Despite the challenges posed by persistent rains, we are committed to ensuring all-weather roads for our people. We’ve already begun grading, gravelling, and drainage works in several critical areas,” said Dr. Serem.

At multiple stopovers, the officials engaged directly with residents, listening to their concerns and collecting proposals for roads that need immediate intervention. Locals voiced frustration over deteriorating road conditions, which have disrupted transport, access to health services, and local trade.

“We appreciate the county’s visit and hope they move quickly to fix these roads. Our children are struggling to get to school, and vehicles can’t pass through without getting stuck,” said Mary Cherono, a resident of Tarakwa.

Chief Officer Tanui added that the county has already launched drainage and culvert installation projects in various hotspots and assured residents that more resources will be allocated to affected areas.

The outreach also served as a platform for county officials to sensitize the public about other ongoing development programs under Governor Bii’s administration, including youth empowerment, agribusiness support, and community-driven development initiatives.

Dr. Serem emphasized that collaboration with residents is key to identifying the most pressing infrastructure needs: “By listening to the people, we can implement sustainable projects that reflect real priorities on the ground.”

The Department of Roads has pledged to maintain momentum despite the rains, with additional machinery and technical personnel being deployed to expedite works in the coming weeks.
