Starehe MP Hon Amos Mwago Condemns Abduction of Youth Leader, Demands Justice
By John Kariuki
Starehe Member of Parliament Hon Amos Mwago Maina has issued a strong statement condemning the shocking and unlawful abduction of a youth leader shortly after his legal release by the court. Terming the incident inhuman and unconstitutional, the MP expressed deep concern over what he described as a blatant assault on the rule of law and Kenya’s democratic ideals.
“It is both disturbing and unacceptable that such an abduction could occur in broad daylight under the full watch of state security agencies, especially the police, whose duty is to protect, not to intimidate citizens,” said Hon Mwago.
The MP noted that the youth leader, identified as Kawanjiru, had been lawfully released by the court, only to be forcibly taken by unknown individuals believed to be state agents. He criticized the incident as part of an alarming trend where government forces appear to be targeting young people advocating for transparency, accountability and better governance.
“This cowardly act paints a grim picture of a government increasingly leaning on fear and unlawful tactics to suppress dissent. It is an outright abuse of power and a direct threat to the very foundation of our democratic space,” Hon Mwago added.
Calling for the immediate and unconditional release of Kawanjiru, the Starehe legislator urged oversight bodies to take swift action. He specifically appealed to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights and the Parliament to investigate the matter and ensure those responsible are held accountable.
“This is not just about one individual, it is about safeguarding the rights of every Kenyan. No one should be punished for speaking truth to power,” he said.
Hon Mwago reaffirmed his solidarity with Kenya’s youth and encouraged them not to be intimidated.
“To the young people of this country, do not be silenced. Your voice matters. The call for justice, good governance and inclusive leadership is noble and must be defended,” he concluded.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with human rights defenders and civil society groups joining the call for answers and accountability.
