Rigathi Gachagua Signals Willingness to Step Aside for Stronger Opposition Candidate
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has announced that he is willing to shelve his presidential ambitions for the sake of unity within the United Opposition, a coalition of parties seeking to unseat President William Ruto in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during a town hall meeting with Kenyan diaspora leaders in Washington D.C., Gachagua emphasized the need for a united front and hinted at a formula being developed to identify the most viable opposition candidate.
“We have not yet agreed on who will be the flag bearer of the United Opposition. However, I am ready to set aside my personal ambitions if our agreed formula shows that one of my colleagues is best positioned to defeat Ruto,” Gachagua said. “What unites us is our common goal — WanTam.”
The term "WanTam," though not fully explained, appears to be a rallying slogan for the opposition’s growing movement and could stand for “Wana Tumaini” (Those with Hope) or a similar message of collective aspiration.
Gachagua's remarks come amid growing speculation over who will lead the opposition ticket in 2027. Other notable figures believed to be eyeing the presidency under the United Opposition banner include former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua.
Political analysts have praised Gachagua's statement as a sign of political maturity and a potential turning point for opposition unity.
“For the opposition to stand a real chance in 2027, they will need to avoid the fragmentation that plagued them in previous elections,” said political commentator Dr. Mercy Okello. “Gachagua stepping aside, if necessary, could help consolidate support behind a single candidate.”
The United Opposition is expected to hold a series of high-level meetings in the coming months to formalize its leadership structure and agree on a common manifesto.
