Pope Leo Appoints Bishop Simon Peter Kamomoe as Auxiliary Bishop of Wote Diocese

Pope Leo has appointed Rt. Rev. Simon Peter Kamomoe, currently serving as auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Nairobi, as auxiliary bishop of the newly established Catholic Diocese of Wote in Kenya.

The announcement was made by the Holy See Press Office on Saturday, July 5, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing growth of the Catholic Church in Kenya.

Bishop Kamomoe, who has faithfully served the Church for over three decades, brings with him vast pastoral experience and a strong track record of leadership within the Archdiocese of Nairobi. His new assignment comes just over a year after his consecration as auxiliary bishop of Nairobi on April 6, 2024.

A Life of Service

Born on November 26, 1962, in Gatundu, Kiambu County, Bishop Kamomoe was ordained a priest on June 18, 1994, for the Archdiocese of Nairobi. His priestly formation included studies at Saint Mary’s Major Seminary in Molo, Saint Augustine’s Senior Seminary in Mabanga, and Saint Matthias Mulumba Senior Seminary in Tindinyo.

Bishop Kamomoe began his ministry as an assistant at Queen of Apostles Junior Seminary (1994–1995), and went on to serve in several parishes, including Thigio, Mang’u, Ndundu, and Saint Matia Mulumba in Thika. Between 1998 and 2008, he served as parish priest at Our Lady of Fatima in Kiriko and Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Parish in Kiambu.

During this time, he also took on leadership roles such as vicar forane and member of the College of Consultors.

Since 2008, Bishop Kamomoe has served as administrator of the Minor Basilica of the Holy Family in Nairobi and chaplain of the diocesan Family Pastoral Office, roles in which he was known for his commitment to spiritual formation and family values.

A New Chapter for Wote Diocese

The appointment of Bishop Kamomoe comes as part of the establishment of the Catholic Diocese of Wote, which reflects the Church’s continued expansion to meet the spiritual and pastoral needs of Kenya’s growing Catholic population.

Bishop Kamomoe's experience, particularly in pastoral care, liturgical administration, and family ministry, is expected to provide a strong foundation for the growth of the new diocese.

Faithful across the country have welcomed the appointment with joy, expressing gratitude for Bishop Kamomoe's years of humble service and dedication to the Church.
