Crackdown on Illicit Brew Continues in Tharaka Nithi as 200 Litres Confiscated

Authorities in Tharaka Nithi County have intensified efforts to combat the sale and consumption of illegal alcohol, with a major operation in Iruri Village, Maara Sub-county, leading to the confiscation of 200 litres of illicit brew earlier today.

The operation, led by officers from Magutuni Police Station, resulted in the arrest of four individuals who are now in police custody. The suspects are expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.

Police say the crackdown is part of a nationwide campaign aimed at eliminating the manufacture, distribution, and consumption of illicit alcohol and other illegal substances, which continue to pose a serious public health and security threat.

“This operation is part of a broader directive to rid our communities of harmful and unregulated alcohol. We will not relent until we dismantle these illegal networks,” said an officer who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the ongoing investigation.

Residents of the area have welcomed the enforcement action, citing the negative social and economic impact of illegal brews in the region.

Authorities have urged the public to cooperate by reporting suspicious brewing or distribution activities in their communities, emphasizing that collective responsibility is key to winning the war against illicit alcohol.

The four suspects will be charged with offenses related to the production and possession of unauthorized alcoholic beverages, in violation of the Alcoholic Drinks Control Act and other relevant laws.
