Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued a scathing statement accusing a senior political rival of orchestrating a string of violent attacks against him, his family, and his supporters. In a bold and direct address, Gachagua condemned what he described as a calculated campaign of intimidation using state machinery and organized criminal gangs.
Speaking from the Democratic Citizens Party (DCP) headquarters after an alleged fresh assault on party members, Gachagua called on his rival to accept the reality of waning public support and to cease using underhanded tactics to silence dissent.
“Stop sending goons to attack me, my family, and my supporters. We are Kenyans with rights and freedoms, just like everyone else,” said Gachagua. “You lost the trust of the people—accept it like a gentleman and move on.”
Gachagua detailed a series of incidents dating back to November of the previous year, including attacks at funerals, prayer meetings, and political gatherings. He accused the political figure—whom he did not name directly—of deploying both police officers and criminal elements to disrupt events associated with him.
“In November, you sent goons under police escort to attack mourners and me during a funeral in Limuru. In Nyeri, they attacked my wife and Christians at a prayer meeting, desecrating the altar of God,” he alleged.
He also cited incidents in December, January, and April, including the use of teargas in Nyandarua County, the forced eviction of his children from their office in Nairobi, and a violent intrusion into a church service at PCEA, which he likened to the tragic 2007 Kiambaa church attack.“It is appalling that violence is being repeated in sacred spaces. How far will you go to cling onto influence? Doesn’t it bother your conscience that you're using criminal gangs to intimidate Kenyans who no longer support you?”
Gachagua further claimed that law enforcement officers have been prevented from taking action against the perpetrators of these attacks.
“Even the police are quietly complaining—they are being stopped from arresting and prosecuting those responsible. What message does that send about the rule of law in our country?”
The former Deputy President, now a vocal opposition leader and patron of the DCP, said these continued attacks only strengthen his resolve to champion democracy and defend constitutional freedoms.
“You may use force, but you will never break our spirit. My support base is intact, and no amount of violence will erase the truth or silence our movement,” he concluded.
Gachagua’s explosive remarks are expected to escalate political tensions in the Mt. Kenya region and beyond, as calls mount for independent investigations into the alleged incidents. Civil society groups have already begun urging for the protection of political freedoms and for accountability from security agencies.
