Trans Nzoia Senator Allan Chesang has petitioned the Senate to launch investigations into the controversial relocation of health services from Kitale Level 4 Referral Hospital to Kijana Wamalwa Level 4A Hospital, as well as the handling of revenue within the county's health sector.
Speaking on the Senate floor, Senator Chesang questioned the legality and transparency of the decision by the Trans Nzoia County Government to shift services to the newly established Kijana Wamalwa Hospital. He expressed concern that the move was carried out without proper public participation or the approval of the County Assembly, and could potentially compromise the quality of healthcare for residents.
“The Kitale Hospital still has capacity to expand, while Wamalwa Hospital lacks sufficient skilled health personnel to meet demand,” said Chesang. “This decision seems rushed, unplanned, and not in the best interest of the people.”
The Senator urged the Senate Health Committee to investigate the rationale behind the relocation, its impact on patients, the number of people affected, and whether any adverse outcomes, including loss of life, were recorded as a result of the move.
In addition, Senator Chesang called for a separate inquiry by the Senate Finance and Budget Committee into how the county collects and utilizes public revenue in the health sector. He raised concerns about the current status of two key hospital accounts—the Kitale Hospital Social Scheme and the Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral Hospital account—and demanded full disclosure on their financial standing.
Chesang also questioned the process through which the county government terminated its contract with Regional Business Collection (RBC), a firm previously tasked with electronic revenue collection, asking whether the exit and the selection of any new contractor followed legal procedures.
“The people of Trans Nzoia deserve transparency, accountability, and high-quality health services. It is the Senate’s responsibility to ensure that county governments act within the law and put the interests of the public first,” he stated.
The Senate has since referred Senator Chesang’s concerns to the relevant committees for investigation and further action.
