Rigathi Gachagua Quits UDA, Blasts Party for Betraying Kenyan Ideals

Nairobi, Kenya – Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has formally resigned from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), signaling a dramatic political rupture just months after surviving an impeachment process.

In a searing five-page resignation letter dated May 12, 2025, Gachagua accused the ruling party of betraying its founding principles, labeling its current leadership as unfit to govern and blaming it for Kenya’s socio-political and economic stagnation.

“The party has exhausted and wasted a Kenyan moment to take off economically, socially, and politically,” Gachagua wrote. He decried what he called a “retrogressive philosophy” that has alienated the people and abandoned constitutional ideals.

Once a key architect of UDA’s meteoric rise to power in 2022, Gachagua’s exit marks a stunning reversal, laying bare deep rifts within the ruling coalition. His resignation letter lambasted the party's leadership for undermining institutions, weakening devolution, and damaging Kenya's global image. “We are now embroiled in conflicts and international shame... due to bad diplomacy,” he charged.

Gachagua, known for his combative political style and populist rhetoric, emphasized his disillusionment with the party’s refusal to engage with the public. “It is my firm conviction that... our country lies not in the greatness of men but in the strength of our institutions,” he stated, before concluding with a sharp rebuke: “I tender my resignation from a party that DOES NOT LISTEN TO ITS PEOPLE, THE PEOPLE OF THE REPUBLIC OF KENYA.”

Political analysts see Gachagua’s resignation as a pivotal moment, potentially reshaping alliances ahead of the 2027 general election. His departure leaves President William Ruto facing renewed questions about unity within the ruling coalition.
