President William Samoei Ruto has extended warm congratulations to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on his election as the 267th leader of the Roman Catholic Church, marking a historic moment as Cardinal Robert Prevost becomes the first American to ascend to the papacy.
In a heartfelt message released shortly after the announcement from the Vatican, President Ruto praised the newly elected pope for what he described as a momentous occasion for the global Catholic community and humanity at large.
“Congratulations to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on your election as the 267th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church,” the statement read. “May your papacy be a shining light of love, hope, and compassion; may it uplift the poor, give voice to the voiceless, heal divisions, and steadfastly champion peace, justice, and the sanctity of human dignity around the world.”
President Ruto expressed hope that Pope Leo XIV's leadership would bring renewed moral strength and unity to a world in search of healing and direction. “May your leadership inspire faith, unity, and moral renewal today and for generations to come,” he added.
The President's message underscores Kenya's long-standing relationship with the Vatican and the influential role of the Catholic Church in promoting education, healthcare, and social justice across the country and the continent.
Pope Leo XIV succeeds Pope Francis and is expected to continue the mission of inclusive dialogue and pastoral care amid global challenges facing the Church and society at large.
