Murkomen: “Support Officers Who Defend, Not Those Who Harm” — Calls for Public Respect, Institutional Accountability in Policing

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a strong statement reaffirming the government's commitment to support police officers who act in self-defense, while vowing not to shield rogue elements within the police service who misuse their power to harm civilians.

Speaking during a press briefing at Harambee House, Murkomen struck a balanced tone between defending law enforcement and demanding accountability, emphasizing that while police officers must be respected and protected in the line of duty, those who violate public trust will be held accountable.

“We will support police officers who defend themselves in situations where their lives are in danger, but we will not protect rogue officers who are hell-bent on harming people,” said Murkomen.

He called on both the public and political leaders to show mutual respect and collaboration with the police in the interest of building a peaceful and harmonious society, warning that disrespect for law enforcement risks plunging the country into chaos and anarchy.

“Law and order is the cornerstone of our civilised and democratic society,” he stated. “I appeal to all our leaders and the public to respect our law enforcement officers because the alternative is too dangerous to contemplate.”

Murkomen further reminded citizens and leaders that disagreement with police conduct should not lead to confrontation, but rather be channeled through Kenya’s progressive constitutional mechanisms, such as the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the Internal Affairs Unit of the National Police Service.

“Respect for institutions is the surest way of building our democracy,” he emphasized. “Leaders, whether in Government or Opposition, bear the greatest responsibility of keeping the fabric of our nation together through observance of law and order.”
