Kiharu Member of Parliament, Hon. Ndindi Nyoro, today joined farmers, stakeholders, and local leaders in celebrating a major milestone for the Gatagua Coffee Farmers Cooperative Society, which has now rebranded to Gatagua Agro Marketing Farmers Cooperative Society.
The event marked the launch of several key infrastructure upgrades at the factory, including modern coffee dryers, a state-of-the-art digital weighing system, a security watchtower, and a new CCTV surveillance system. The celebration also coincided with the Society's five-year anniversary of progress and transformation.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Nyoro praised the cooperative’s leadership and members for their resilience and forward-thinking approach. “The transformation we are witnessing here is a testament to what local empowerment and good leadership can achieve. Gatagua is setting the pace not just in coffee but in agribusiness innovation,” he said.
Under the leadership of Mr. Chege Irungu, the Society has been making targeted investments in enhancing productivity, including the training of farmers and infrastructure development. These efforts have resulted in higher returns for farmers, with the factory recently paying KSh 120 per kilogram of coffee—the highest in the region.
In a bold move toward diversification, the Society announced plans to expand into aggregation and value addition of other agricultural products, including milk, as it evolves into a more comprehensive agro-marketing hub.
“We are now looking beyond coffee. Our farmers deserve better returns from all their produce, and value addition is the next frontier,” said Mr. Irungu during his address.
The event was graced by key stakeholders including millers, auditors, government officials, and Hon. Wachiku, who commended the Society’s achievements and promised continued support.
“This is how we build a self-reliant Africa—by supporting local industries, empowering farmers, and ensuring value stays within our communities,” Hon. Nyoro concluded, echoing his signature message: “We are African and Africa is our Business.”
