State House Digital Strategist and Head of Presidential Special Projects, Dennis Itumbi, has dismissed sensational reports claiming that President William Ruto was struck with a shoe during his recent tour of Migori County, instead offering a different version of events that has since gone viral.
In a statement issued via social media after reviewing available footage, Itumbi described the incident as a "moment that got out of hand," rooted not in hostility but in a light-hearted gesture gone wrong.
According to Itumbi, the incident occurred as the crowd enthusiastically raised their phones to capture a glimpse of the Head of State. Amid the excitement, one citizen — without a phone — lifted his shoe in jest, pretending it was a camera. The footage (attached in Itumbi's post) shows the man mimicking a photo-taking motion with the shoe, which appeared to amuse those nearby.
However, another person beside him, reportedly irritated that the “shoe-cam” was obstructing their view, slapped the shoe away. The unintended consequence: the shoe flew forward, briefly startling security personnel as it landed near the President.
“There was no intent to harm. Just a humorous moment that escalated unexpectedly,” said Itumbi.
In a surprising twist, Itumbi also launched a goodwill appeal to trace the man behind the improvised “shoe camera.” He revealed that Sam Mburu, a friend and philanthropist, has offered to gift the man a real smartphone to support his creativity and content creation ambitions.
“This guy turned a limitation into a moment of creativity. We want to reward that spirit,” Itumbi stated. “Help us find him. If you know who he is, inbox me.”
The Presidential team has used the moment to underscore a broader message: encouraging Kenyan youth to embrace digital content creation as a means of expression and opportunity.
