Gospel Singer Ringtone in Court Over Sh50 Million Land Fraud Case

Popular gospel singer Alex Nyachonga Apoko, better known by his stage name Ringtone, was arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts on Friday to face multiple charges in connection with a Sh50 million land fraud case.

Ringtone is accused of conspiring to defraud a Nairobi woman of her 0.1908-hectare parcel of land located in the upscale Runda estate. He faces charges including conspiracy to defraud, false swearing, and perjury.

According to court documents, the charges stem from an incident on May 18, 2023, when the complainant reported to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) that Ringtone, accompanied by his alleged accomplice Juma Ayoro and a group of hired individuals, unlawfully entered her Runda property. The group reportedly evicted the property’s caretaker by force and took over the residence.

DCI’s Land Fraud Investigations Unit launched a probe, uncovering what they described as a “web of deceit.” Detectives revealed that on February 28, 2023, Ringtone filed an affidavit falsely claiming adverse possession of the land, stating he had lived on the property for over 20 years. However, investigators found that the complainant has been the legal owner since March 14, 2000, and has consistently paid all property-related fees and charges.

Armed with this evidence, police obtained an arrest warrant on April 14, 2025. Ringtone allegedly evaded capture for several weeks before detectives tracked him to a hideout in Kasarani, where he was arrested.

In court, the musician pleaded not guilty to all charges. The prosecution, citing the gravity of the allegations and the accused’s initial attempt to evade arrest, opposed his release on bail. The court agreed, denying him bail and ordering his remand at the Industrial Area prison.

Ringtone is expected back in court on Monday for a bail hearing, where the judge will determine whether he can be released pending trial.

The case continues to draw public interest, with many Kenyans expressing shock over the involvement of a high-profile gospel artist in such a serious legal matter.
