Explosives Seized in Passenger Bus, Five Arrested in Multi-County Anti-Terror Operation

A major security breach was averted over the weekend when a multi-agency security patrol intercepted a passenger bus along the Kanyonyoo–Embu Highway, uncovering a concealed cache of explosives destined for Meru.

The routine inspection turned into a high-stakes operation when officers discovered a suspicious white carton branded with LATO Milk logos tucked away among passenger luggage. Upon inspection, the package was found to contain ten water gel explosives labeled EXPLOGEL V6, a detonating cord, and two IDEAL electric detonators—components commonly associated with industrial or terror-related explosives.

The bus, which had originated from Mombasa and was headed for Meru, was immediately escorted to Kanyonyoo Police Station. The driver, Lawrance Kioko Mutuku, and the conductor, Said Rashid Amour, were taken into custody for questioning.

Investigators from the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) and Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) quickly launched a forensic-led operation that traced the package to Brenda Imboyanga Makhulungu, the registered sender. She had deceptively labeled the shipment as “Dawa ya Maji” (water treatment chemicals) when dispatching it from Tahmeed’s Kakamega office, with a complex route spanning from Kakamega to Mombasa, then redirected to Meru via Kitui.

Brenda was arrested in Mundutsu village, Kakamega County, and her capture led authorities to two more suspects: David Tindi Andala and John Kariuki Kung’u, who were apprehended in Meru town.

All five suspects are now in custody as investigations continue into what authorities believe may be a coordinated plot involving the transportation of explosives across multiple counties.

The bus and the seized explosive materials have been detained as exhibits. Security agencies have heightened surveillance and issued a public appeal for vigilance, urging Kenyans to report any suspicious packages or activity to authorities immediately.
