Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua |
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has made a bold political declaration, announcing that Central Kenya has officially severed ties with President William Ruto and will not support his re-election bid in 2027.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with vernacular radio stations from his Wamunyoro home on Sunday evening, Gachagua framed his remarks as an “interim report” on the country’s shifting political landscape and the evolving dynamics within the vote-rich Mt. Kenya region.
“We, the people of Central Kenya, have cut political ties with President Ruto from today,” Gachagua stated emphatically. “We will not support him in 2027.”
Central Kenya to Exit UDA, Form New Political Party
Gachagua went a step further, declaring that Mt. Kenya was officially withdrawing from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), effectively terminating its alliance with the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition.
“We are done with UDA,” he declared. “Never again will we go to an election without our own political party. Last time, we attended the wedding in the groom’s car, but when we got to the river, he told us to alight and picked other people.”
His remarks appear to reference what he perceives as betrayal by President Ruto, whom he accused of sidelining the region despite its overwhelming support in the 2022 elections.
Warning to Leaders Backing Ruto
Gachagua also sent a strong warning to Central Kenya leaders who continue to support Ruto, stating that they would face political consequences for prioritizing personal interests over those of the community.
“This region will vote out all leaders who sell our people for their own gain,” he warned. “Those who cheer as the President disrespects the community will be rejected at the ballot.”
He further claimed that residents of Mt. Kenya had already identified such individuals and would ensure they are ousted in the next general election.
Formation of a New Political Party
Gachagua also revealed that plans for a new political party were at an advanced stage, with an official unveiling set for May 2025.
“The party is ready, but I am careful not to reveal the name or finer details too soon to avoid sabotage,” he said.
He disclosed that he has been engaging political leaders from across the country, including Samburu, Kisii, Western Kenya, and Ukambani, in an effort to build a broad-based coalition.
“Our network is expanding, and we are laying the foundation for a strong political movement ahead of 2027,” Gachagua added.
His latest remarks signal a dramatic shift in Kenya’s political landscape, setting the stage for what could be a high-stakes battle for the Mt. Kenya vote in the next general election.
